Points, Promotions, and Planning for a Great Vacation

It may seem too early in the year, but it’s time to think about vacation planning. In our house, we tend to plan our vacations way in advance, sometimes, up to a year in advance. Not everyone has that luxury, but with advance planning and some strategy, you can make your vacation a true getaway, and a financial success. When planning your next vacation, consider these tips to make the most of your travel budget. By scoring great deals on airfare, cruises, and train travel, you can enjoy a memorable trip without breaking the bank.

One way to save on travel expenses is to take advantage of mileage programs, credit card rewards, and hotel points. By accumulating miles through frequent flyer programs or credit card rewards, you can offset the cost of flights or even score free tickets. Many of us travel for work or for a few weekend getaways each year, so using a single hotel, airline, or credit card can help build those points quickly. If you travel a lot for work, it’s even easier and you may be able to benefit from points programs as your employer pays for the travel. That’s a win!

Don’t forget promotions. Many cruise lines, hotels, airlines and other travel related companies tend to have promotional offers for their loyalty members on a fairly regular basis. Keep your eyes open for special offers from your particular provider. These can sometimes save members thousands of dollars. Additionally, booking in advance and keeping an eye out for special promotions can help you secure the best deals on transportation. We recently scored a business class seat on a nonstop flight from Europe to the US for a fraction of air miles normally requested for that route.

Traveling during off-peak periods is another savvy strategy to cut costs. By avoiding peak travel seasons, you can often find lower prices on accommodations and attractions while enjoying a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds.

Using points, booking in advance, and traveling during off-peak periods are just the three biggest tips to help you save on vacation. You can use other strategies as well such as sharing accommodation, or joining group tours.

When you shop can also make a big difference in savings. For example, booking well in advance you can usually save money on airfare if you must fly at a specific time. We’ve all seen those amazing, last-minute getaway fares, but can’t always take advantage. We can plan in advance and have a wider selection of seating options and airfare. Speaking of when you shop, did you know many cruise lines offer discounted fares in winter for the upcoming cruise season? You can read more about that at my post Tips for Scoring a Great Cruise Deal.
